THERE IS A SCIENCE TO CHOOSING PAINT COLOURS. LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT HOW THIS WORKS:
Yellow is a happy colour, full of sunshine. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and dining rooms, it also feels spacious and welcoming in halls, entries and small spaces. But keep it under control. Large expanses create tension.
Orange is exciting and promotes enthusiasm and energy. If you have an exercise room, go for this colour and release all that physical energy and emotion.
Red raises energy levels, creates excitement and draws people together, encouraging conversation, especially at night by lamplight. It's great for living and dining rooms where it is rich and elegant.
Purple is rich, dramatic and luxuriously sophisticated in its darker shades, and as a secondary colour it gives depth to a colour scheme. Lighter shades, such as lavender or lilac, give bedrooms a warm restfulness.
Blue is calming, relaxing and serene and works well in bedrooms and bathrooms. Watch the shades though. Light blue can feel cold if there is little natural light so balance it with warm colours for the furnishings. Dark blues can feel sad as a main colour scheme so look for warmer or brighter blues.
Green is considered the most restful colour and can suit any room. It cools the kitchen, while in the hallway it helps unwind and has a warm comfort.
Neutrals (black, grey, white and brown) are flexible and provide the backdrop to a colour scheme.
Add colour to liven things up and reduce it to calm things down. Black can be a very useful colour to give a scheme depth but use it sparingly.
